Afognak Wilderness Lodge is the place to be for nature lovers and avid fishermen alike. This lodge is unique in its dense population of wildlife, marine animals, and abundant fish that can be found right in the rivers, as well as the ocean. Located on Afognak Island, second largest of the Kodiak Islands, the lodge is equipped with everything you need to enjoy the rugged terrain.
The lodge was built in 1974, and has been family-run ever since. In 2001, the north & eastern portions of Afognak Island, known as the “jewel of Alaska”, became preserved as the Afognak State Park. Uniquely, Afognak Wilderness Lodge is located inside of the park, allowing guests the opportunity to stay in a protected natural area.
The lodge is situated on the northern side of Afognak Island; it’s characterized by towering forests, tapering bays, and rocky coastline. These conditions create the ideal home for Kodiak brown bear, deer, and elk on the island as well as sea lion, sea otter, and seals. Above, you’ll find Bald Eagle, puffin, and other sea birds. You’ll be able to get up close with wildlife and pristine wilderness when you stay here.
Guests have their choice of staying in either the main lodge, or spacious individual cabins; you’ll find yourself surrounded by lush forest and tranquil waters. Of course, no vacation at Afognak Lodge would be complete without tucking into a hearty meal made from locally sourced ingredients. After a good meal, and a good night’s sleep, you’ll be fortified for the adventure that awaits you in the morning.
Partake in the incredible fishing of Afognak and the Kodiak Islands! You’ll be able to fish for salmon, trout, halibut, cod, and more with experienced guides. Enjoy the natural splendor of Afognak with a kayak photography tour. You’ll see all the animals that live on the island, and get a closer look at rugged topographical features that characterize the island.
